The Pylontech US5000 is the benchmark entry-level battery for South African solar installations. Its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry provides 6,000+ cycles at 90% DoD — over 16 years at one cycle per day. Compatible with all major SA inverters.
The BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS 10.2 is a high-voltage modular battery system. Its 10.2 kWh capacity covers most SA homes through a full Stage 6 cycle. BYD's blade LFP cells deliver industry-leading 8,000 cycles — 22 years of daily use.
The Hubble AM-5 is one of the most popular mid-range batteries in South Africa, assembled locally by Hubble Lithium. Its 5.5 kWh capacity (5 kWh usable) makes it a natural Stage 4 backup solution. Local support and next-day replacement under warranty is a key advantage over imported alternatives.
The Dyness B4850 is a compact wall-mounted LFP battery competing directly with the Pylontech US5000 at a lower price point. Its 4.8 kWh capacity and 6,000-cycle lifespan make it an attractive alternative for budget-conscious installations, especially where wall space is limited.
REVOV is a South African battery brand using second-life LFP cells reclaimed from EV packs — rigorously retested to 80%+ capacity. The R100 offers 10 kWh at a significantly lower price per kWh than new-cell alternatives. Excellent for budget-conscious large-home installations.
How to choose a solar battery in South Africa
Chemistry first: All batteries in this guide use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Avoid NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries for home use — they have higher fire risk and shorter cycle life. LFP is the only chemistry SAPVIA recommends for residential SA installations.
Size for your worst load-shedding slot: Stage 6 = 4.5 consecutive hours. A medium 3-bedroom SA home uses ~1–1.5 kWh/hour on essential loads. That means you need 4.5–6.75 kWh of usable storage to get through one Stage 6 slot without solar topping up. Two Pylontech US5000s (8.6 kWh usable) is the benchmark.
Verify compatibility with your inverter: Always confirm the battery communicates with your inverter via CAN or RS485. Without proper BMS communication, the battery cannot protect itself from overcharge/overdischarge. Your installer should configure the inverter to use the battery's BMS-reported state of charge.
Price per usable kWh: Compare on R/kWh of usable capacity — not total capacity. A 5 kWh battery at 90% DoD gives 4.5 kWh usable. Use this metric to compare the Pylontech, BYD, and Hubble fairly.
